Can modern cities encourage disabled seniors to walk more?
This project is a collaboration with architects from Delft University of Technology
Walking outdoors is essential for healthy aging. We set up a game-of-choice for seniors, to study which sidewalk characteristics stimulate older people to walk. We focus on seniors with mobility impairments.
In an online game-of-choice, participants choose from alternative routes, which differ by sidewalk characteristics and walking time (see picture above, scroll through the gallery). Statistical analysis of the choices allows to figure out how much longer elderly are willing to walk if the pavement is smooth, the path is wide, surroundings are green, there are benches on the route, etc. For example, benches along the route increase the time spent walking with up to three times for mobility impaired seniors.
